And the producers thuoght canned laughter was appropreate when he said "arm all the passengers"

Too bad neither Carrol O'Conner nor the writers and producers of the show believed that statement was worth anything, except to make the character of Archie look bad.

I was still in college when that episode was first shown, and I remember thinking that guns on an airliner was a crazy idea.
Another youthful delusion fallen by the wayside ...

I did think it was funny when he said they ought to pass out pistols at the beginning of the flight and pick them up at the end, like they were headsets or something.

I wish I could remember the comedian (and the exact quote) from many years ago, but he said something like: "the odds of being on a plane that has a bomb on it are 1 in 1,215,000 (made it up), and the odds of being on a plane with TWO bombs on it are 1 in 3 billion (made that up too.). So, make sure you bring your own bomb!"
