Good call, I think. Not carrying it is the big win, though. IMHO, and all.

This forum is full of lawyers, IT nerds, mailmen, janitors, burger flippers and pretty much anything you can think of. Most people run into the PTC thing head first with the "I'll do it my way" frame of mind. This forum is a quickly humbling experience. There is a shitton of collective knowledge and experience here. If you express an opinion or ask a question and get the same response from ten different people who have posts in the thousands, chances are they are right and you are wrong. It's good to see you took that slice of humble pie. These guys know what they are talking about.

BTW, Welcome!

About two weeks ago, I walked into a bank with my firearm exposed. I normally do not have my firearm exposed as I would (in just about any other situation) prefer a more stealthy approach. However I have cash bags that I have to carry into the bank. I choose to expose my firearm to detour any unwanted behavior from other civilians that are observing me walking with cash bags. This was my plan and I had executed this routine twice before this infraction.

While I was filling out my deposit information at the bank, and had all of the cash exposed, a lady starts making comments on my exposed firearm. She announced to the bank and I quote, "He can't have that in here." I calmly turned to her and said, as a matter of fact I can, and explained I was doing nothing illegal. This seemed to calm her down for a few minutes as I turned to finish carrying out my business. Upon doing so I discovered I had left my business check stamp in my truck, and needed to go to the parking lot to recover it so I could stamp the checks for my deposit.

I would suggest that in handling a periodic bank deposit involving substantial sums of cash, it is vitally important to be sure everything goes like clockwork. If it were me, I would stamp all the checks before leaving for the bank so that I could focus on the "courier role" rather than the "financial manager role" while performing the actual deposit.

I think that would be the easiest, cheapest, and most effective way to fix the problem, even though it has nothing to do with the root cause.

So I packed everything back up, walked to my truck, and returned to the bank with my stamp. As I opened up the door, the woman that had previously commented on my exposed firearm, had now formed a posse. As I walked in the door she announced to a group of about 7-8 people surrounding her while pointing at me, "There he is.".... Wow. Now I knew I needed to go defuse this situation before it got any further. That being said, I calmly walked over to the lady, and explained that our sheriff had given me explicit permission to carry a firearm. I informed her that I was not breaking the law, and asked her if she had any questions for me. She said, no she did not and it became a dead issue. She eventually smiled and waved as I left the bank.

It's hard to tell from the narrative alone, but that for me would be very close to the point where I would call 911 and say that I'm making a bank deposit and feel unsafe because there is a group of 7-8 people surrounding me. The real issues here are that you don't want the situation to get out of control and you want to be the first one to call 911.

Now one can only wonder if I had a badge exposed on my belt next to my gun, would anybody have said anything? My guess is no.

I know you've already decided not to follow through on this, but for the sake of completeness, let's finish out the scenario. As noted upthread, the crowd probably would have been confused by a badge and a gun without a uniform. Would it have helped in this particular case? Maybe, probably not. Are there other scenarios, also likely, that it would worsen? Yes.

Quote:
Had I been wearing a badge nobody would have said anything. This may also save you sometime in case someone were to have called the police. Then I have to sit there for 20 minutes while they verify who I am.

I would be surprised if sitting there for 20 minutes would be the likely outcome though it depends what jurisdiction you're in.

I believe that the best security when transporting larger amounts of cash is to be sure no one around you knows you're doing it.

Yeah, I think the IT nerds have a pretty high ratio around here.

I can't mix a drink, hell, I can barely make a cup of coffee but I could show you how to find all of the IP addresses in a /18 supernetted class C network.

How about a balding man with a pony tail, bifocals, a coffee cup that says 0xdecafbad on it, and a laptop bag with a ballistic shield and integral holster? Just speculating. I myself have sufficient social skills that no one would believe I write device drivers for fun.

Networld|Interop from about five years ago? Guessing. I had a colleague who had that globe thing on a coffee cup but I can't remember the tag line.
