The following e-mail showed up in my campus inbox this afternoon. I have reproduced the formatting as I received it. Because like most people my eyes are drawn to things in bold, my first thought was "Oh crap! Not here..." My second thought, after realize it was the 14th not the 21st, was something along the lines of "Those idiots in the administration..."
Quote: TO: Law School Students, Staff and Faculty FR: Safety Committee RE: Safety Day for Spring Semester ================================= When: Monday, April 21 TOPIC: Active Shooter in a Building Definition: A suspect or assailant whose activity is immediately causing death and serious injury.
Unfortunately, this violent type of event is occurring in workplaces and schools with catastrophic results. Next Monday, April 21, representatives from the University Department of Emergency Management and the University Police Department will present an informational and instructional session designed to empower people with knowledge and strategies in an active shooter situation.
Yes, the obvious question is "When are you going to let me carry without being expelled?"
So, after being told to call 911 and hide under desk if I'm being shot at...
Does anyone have polite, clearly worded, persuasive questions, for the UPD?

Ask them exactly the question you stated here.

Yea! Knowledge is power, unless the bad guy has a gun, or a knife, or a bat, or a bottle, or is twice your size, or is on PCP, or sneaks up behind you, or.......

Lawyer in training, let us know if they mention car keys. This says to me; "You are a college student, therefore you are not bright enough to take care of your self." When will these people get it?
ETA I think there are some stats around here somewhere that some copies of might be helpful.

Things to do when there is an active shooter according to the UofM PD:
1. call 911
2. stay calm
3. try to get away
4. try to lock/barricade the door to your classroom
5. post signs in exterior windows to tell the cops you're there
6. do what the PD tell you when they show up with guns
7. don't have anything in your hands (lest the cops decide to shoot you)
8. don't even think about carrying a gun, even if you have a permit, because no one knows what the police might do if they see a gun, and of course it's against the rules

What, pee themselves?
If they see a gun, they should do the same thing any OTHER civilian is supposed to do. Assess and react accordingly.
Yeah, I know, wishful thinking.

No, it was strongly implied that they'd shoot first and ask questions later. (Directed at me, the person asking them questions they didn't like.)

Could you imagine the uproar.....
Not that it would do you a lot of good. This is one where a test case is DEFINITELY for someone else.

How dare you question the mighty and all powerful Oz?
Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain...

Yep, that was pretty much the attitude as soon as I brought up the fact that MN was a carry state.
It was sad how they started out by describing all the training they do to prepare for a "shooter in the building" scenario, but then when confronted with the possibility that someone had ignored their rules in order to defend themselves that rule-breaker ran the risk of not knowing what would happen to them when the PD showed up and had to make a "split-second decision."

Someone I know does some training for LEO. He described to me an excercise he has set up with simunition. Two good guys have their weapons trained on two or three bad guys who are surrendering, exiting the building, hands above their heads, walking towards the good guys. At this point the trainer throws in the "wild card". Entrance stage left: unrelated, running, screaming civilian. Trainer states that at this point most new recruits (good guys) end up firing their weapons on the (bad guys) who are surrendering.
my point?
I think it is absurd that a good guy is not a component included in training.
