Lauderhill: Shotgun blast ends apartment break in
Helicopter, dogs used to track criminal; school comes out of lockdown

LAUDERHILL - Police are looking for a would-be robber who's lucky to be alive.

Popping a glass sliding door from its track, the suspect slipped into the apartment with his bicycle at hand and rifled through the home owner's electronics Thursday afternoon, police said.

Hearing the clatter, the home's resident, Kevin Nelson, 31, called out from the back room, police said.

No response.

The next noise would be the sound of Nelson's shotgun firing at the home invader, who tore through a screen door as he fled and jumped over a fence, officials said. He left his bicycle behind.

The fleeing man, who police say is armed and still on the loose, is 5-feet-5 and of medium build. He wore a white button-down shirt with short sleeves, blue jeans and a black bandana.

The attempted robbery happened at about 10 a.m. at the Continental Apartments in the 1800 block of Northwest 46th Avenue, said city police spokesman Capt. Rick Rocco said.

"Yeah, I just shot at him," Nelson calmly tells a police dispatcher as heard on 911 tapes released hours after the shooting.

When asked if the intruder shot back, Nelson replies, "No, he didn't get the chance."

Authorities ask anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.

I have NO SYMPATHY for these dumbasses! As in hunting, there oughta be 'no daily limit' when it comes to bagging these sorry f***s that B&E.

Sounds like a coverup for a negligent discharge to me.

Why would one take a bike into a apartment if you're robbing it?

Or it is a bicycle that the shooter had previously stolen.

"Yeah, I just shot at him," Nelson calmly tells a police dispatcher as heard on 911 tapes released hours after the shooting."

I'm not certain you would be calm if you just caught someone ransacking your house and you took a shot at them with a shotgun.
