Gun background checks increase
Posted at 4:04 PM on May 27, 2009 by Bob Collins (0 Comments)

MPR's Than Tibbetts has sent along an update of a post I made last January with an increase in gun sales following the election of Barack Obama.

According to the FBI, there have been 110,488 background checks for firearms owners in Minnesota since the beginning of 2009. Over a 10-year period, the state averaged 18,500 checks per month.

The rate of increase in Minnesota is higher than the national average. Nationally, federal background checks are up about 25 percent.

In DC recently, a gun show promoter's advertisement said, "Come and get them while you still can."

A story last month on NPR suggested that goes for ammunition, too.

So, I make that nearly a 50% increase over the ten year average. Is that right?

Using their numbers: 110,488/4 = 27622
27622-18500 = 9122
9122/18500 = 49%

Must be because originally I assumed they included May as well, but in that case it comes out to a 19% increase, which while still impressive, is below the national average.

If you go back to the original article there are a number of hyperlinks I did not bother to format into my cut and paste job.

The data is only through April as can be seen here: http://www.fbi.gov/hq/cjisd/nics/state_totals.htm

Ok help me with the legend...are those ranges of percentages?? If so, then there is no way the national average is 25%. And I have a heard time believing those are raw numbers, unless those are in tens of thousands or something.

Sorry, I should have been clear... the map I made shows thousands of NICS checks broken into four different ranges 3 to 36 thousand, 36 to 77 thousand, etc... For the totals in 2009 thus far.

I don't have state by state data for prior years so I can't generate a map for those periods in time. The FBI basically just provides national totals for prior years. In the four months listed in 2009 they're reporting 5,030,950 NICS checks.

Gotcha...okay.

I was thinking they were percentage increases or per capita checks or something and was looking at the map trying to find patterns in behavior changes and such.

But for the most part the highest states are also the ones with larger populations so it makes sense.

This may be a more relative way to look at things. Here is the Jan-Apr 2009 NICS data along with each states' population (2008) and then with NICS checks divided by the population. This shows how states compare with gun purchases (well, NISC checks) per 1000 people. Apparently those Kentuckians are buying like mad!

Code:

 That's over eight times the national average, and over four times the per capita average of the next closest state (Wyoming @ 37.79 / 1000)

Yeah, that's a pretty big outlier. Did I miss something that happened in Kentucky this year?? That's a little to extreme to just be coincidence, gotta be something behind it.

Yea, you'd think the NCIS system would show far fewer names being run in KY, since there are only two last names.

The May NICS stats are published out there now too. The trend in KY remains. Across the board though May was noticeably slower than the rest of the months. We must be starting to come down the back side of the 'rush to buy' hill finally.
