Post subject:  Need Help With Handgun Safe Recommendations

I'm trying to find an affordable safe for my two handguns to keep them out of the hands of my two toddlers running around the house. While I don't want to spend a fortune, I don't necessarily want something cheap either. The primary goal would be to keep the kids out and to at least slow down a petty theft if a break-in were to occur while I was gone. I also don't need anything fancy like those bio-safes. I'm looking for something simple like an "old school" combination lock or something.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Travis

I have one of these -

Image May be bigger than what you are looking for, but that just gives you room for ammo and a growwing collection. I like having everything but my carry in one place. I opted for key locks, works fine. I unlock it when I am home and lock it when I go out. Baby gate keeps the kiddo out of the bedrooms but as we approach the age of converting the crib to kiddie bed having the safe already in place is a comfort.

They have Stack-On products at Fleet-Farm. Usually at great prices.

With those small, light, gun boxes (I have 4 in addition to a full size safe) you want to make sure to use at least two lag bolts into a couple of wall studs; otherwise it just makes a convenient carry box for the burgler. Even if it's not bolted down it'll keep little hands off the guns.

I didn't think of bolting it down, but now it seems almost necessary.

Does anyone story their guns in a hidden location, where you almost can't tell it's a safe when you locate it? Or does the safe itself provide enough protection?

The best place to bolt it down is in the back of a narrow closet since it's pretty well hidden and may be missed. If it's not missed it'll be much harder to take a crowbar to it to either pry it open or pry it off the wall.
