Post subject:  Nurse questions me about firearms in my house....

I have a brand new bouncing baby boy born last Wednesday. He's a little preemie so they want him in for a checkup at my family physician every week for awhile.

Well today is the first appointment for him at Fairview Clinic Northeast in New Brighton. We're sitting in the exam room with the nurse asking the prescreening questions and she's typing answers into the computer... All is well. Then...

DO YOU HAVE FIREARMS IN THE HOUSE?
DO YOU KEEP TRIGGER GUARDS ON ALL OF YOU GUNS?

This comes on the heels of do you have pets in the house. Not thinking twice I answer "you betcha" and I keep them in a locked safe. Then reality sets in as I'm watching her make a record of my answers. I didn't make a scene about it as the wife would have had a fit but I'm thinking to myself "WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!?!

Any doctors in the house know exactly what happens with that information? Is that a personal medical history question only kept in a file for my physician and my or is this some government survey they will be turning into some health authorities like that non-politically biased center for disease control? And now that leaves me wondering if and who I should contact to raise hell with over this.

It is part of the medicalization of safety practices and domestic violence. Yes, the answer will stay in your chart. It will probably go no farther.

Doctors and nurses are not priests, and the hospital is not a confessional.

Hmmmm????

I'm a little sleep deprived. Care to elaborate in layman’s terms?

First, congratulations! You'll be able to sleep again, oh around February.

What MostlyHarmless means to say is that while your medical info is private, that privacy is not absolute. There are conditions where your medical info may be shared with parties beyond your medical care providers. A big example would be your insurance company. Info may also be shared with certain govt agencies and accrediting boards. I wouldn't worry about it too much, but then I would have answered "no"? :)

Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor, but I spend a lot of time around them...

I've had that question before, to which I answered "NOYB". Funny... they didn't ask me if I had a bathtub, any 1 gallon pails, or a pool.

Kinda on the same topic, when i got hired on at my job. When filling out the health insurance forms there was a question "Are you around loaded fire arms?". I wrote in only when i load them and place them on my person.

I agree with a reminder that guns should be kept safely away from children. Maybe someone wouldn't think about it with the flurry of activity a new baby brings.

But, asking questions that are really none of their business stinks of the non-confrontational method of telling someone what to do. We would hate that wouldn't we? :x

If the Obama Politburo decides they want the information, one of their apparatchiks will be able to access it.

Well congratulations! Is this your first?

I have two at home (1 and 3 yrs), so it wasn't too long ago that we went throught the same type of deal. I distinctly remember being asked those questions. I answered honestly ("yes" & "yes"), but I also told the nurse that a better question is to ask if we have a pool at home as they are, statistically, much more dangerous to young children. Didn't get a response out of either of them...

The questions came from the Pediactric Association. They are a liberal group.

Now that we're opening up medical records, the Feds will have access.

I had my 18year old son in to see a few doctors after a bad car accident and the same question came up almost every time. I left it blank and when asked I indicated it was not medically related information and I would not provide it.

One nurse tried to give me some lip and I said fine I'll leave and file a complaint, she backed down immediately.

I asked the doctor about it when he came in and he said he had heard it was on the forms now but had no idea why.

I guess next time I should not be wearing my Fiocchi Ammo hat when I go.

A hearty congrats from me as well 8) dismal is absolutely correct......but he failed to mention that the February date will likely occur appoximately in the year 2040, give or take a decade. :bang: I'm speaking as a man with experience in these matters.

And by the way I share the NOY(effen)B sentiment when it comes to some of their questions. :!:

IMH and Professional Opinion....answer NYFB to smoking or drinking alcohol too. Some medical professionals just love to stir the pot, but you didn't hear that from me!

Thanks for the grats. This is my third... 22 yo girl, 10 yo boy, and now a new born. Yep nicely spaced so I haven't had a decent nigt sleep in my entire adult life... :bang:

Yep the nurse caugh me off guard. I should know better than to give away that kind of information to anyone /kicks self

Funny when I mentioned it to an elderly co work in the accounting dept this morning she didn't see anything wrong with the question until I mentioned statistically more children accidentally drown in 5 gallon buckets every year than are accidentally killed with daddy's firearms... I love the look on their face just after the stinging slap of reality hits them.

Hmmm on second thought maybe feeding them answers they can't use against us IS the way to go. I'm such an reactionary sometimes...
