I have been looking at buying a 1911. Lots of different makes and models, has anyone had any experience with this brand?

here is the one I am looking at.

I've got one and have been very pleased with it. A ton of gun for the money, if you ask me. Those grips look a lot nicer than the black plastic ones that came with mine.

BUY IT

I own one, and have put probably around 1,000 rounds through it. I have only cleaned it a few times, and it has not failed to feed/fire/eject/etc ever. Every round (including reloads) went through it flawlessly. My dads Springfield on the other hand will jam about 1 out of 75 rounds.

I've got one and it's been great. Taurus has a spotty reputation, but they seem to have gotten this one right.

Others in the same price range:
Para GI Expert
Springfield Mil-spec (not the G.I)
STI Spartan

Don't think twice, just get one.

Reliable as can be, nice and accurate...

Only sold mine because

a) I shoot the Glock platform better in semi-autos
b) I went bigger

I was pondering the same question when Uncle Sam gave me "stimulus" gun money last year.

I bought the STI Spartan.
Love it.
Glad I bought it over the MiM parts present in the Taurus.

STI has a great rep and customer service. I'd make the same decision again.
(Note: I have never owned a Taurus, and have no experience with them, good or ill.)

I did read up and research quite a bit before my purchase though, and like to think I dodged a potential bullet by avoiding the Taurus. YMMV.

They have a Taurus 1911 owner's forum so you can see and read what's up with them. The most common complaint I have seen is that for some reason, the ambi safety comes apart. I understand that if it happens, it's an easy fix.

I personally witnessed this during an NRA instructor's class last year, as well.

The nice thing about the Taurus 1911, is that you get some upgrades: ambi safety, enlarged ejection port, different trigger, different sights (compared to a standard or mi.-spec model).

Plus, there's the lifeftime warrantee...

The taurus and STI spartan are good comparisons. While I don't think you can go wrong with either I would giv ethe STI a slight edge. Look at a tuned one from Brazo and I know you'll be happy.

I just acquired my first 1911, a Taurus PT1911DTR. I've certainly not had it long enough to give a solid review or recommendation, but it seems like a great gun. I ran 50 rounds through it yesterday. It shot as well as I could and had no malfunctions.

For just over $600 I think it is on par with many other 1911 models that cost typically around $1000.

Just wondering what the difference is between the Springfield Armory Mil Spec and the Taurus shown above. I have been looking at both but not quite sure which one to get. Are there better upgrades for one vs. the other or are the about the same with one being cheaper than other?

From past discussions on this topic, rimshot, I think you and I are the only ones on this forum without some variant of the 1911....

I don't think I've ever heard an unkind word said about them, you'll be happy. I'll be jealous.

i cant say much about the sprinfeild as ive never had one. i did however get to babysit a taurus for a bit over a year when a buddy of mine went to the sandbox.

all i can say is the taurus is a great gun for the money. i put a lot of rounds threw his and as far as im concerned for coming straight out of the box it needs no modifications or upgrades. it was a great shooting gun and very accurate with a pretty decent trigger. it broke nice and clean and i was pretty impressed by it.

i know if i buy a 1911 it will be a taurus.

I'm still no 1911 expert, but assuming you're referring to mine above, here are the differences I know of between it and a Springfield Milspec:

- Springfield Milspec is either parkerized or bright stainless finish; Taurus Duotone is stainless with black two-tone
- Trigger on Milspec is shorter and not drilled
- Hammer is spur on Milspec; on Taurus it is skeletonized target-style
- somewhat different safety mechanisms
- Milspec has 7 rd mags; Taurus has 8 rd mags
- Milspec has arched mainspring housing vs flat on Taurus
- Milspec has left-side safety; Taurus has ambi safety
- Slightly different grip safety shape
- May have different sights depending on what Taurus model you get. Some Taurus 1911s have Heinie 'straight eight' sights and some have 3-dot Novaks
- Taurus has checkered front strap and under trigger guard; Milspec doesn't
- Taurus has full-length guide rod

Both seem to be great guns. I'm sure you won't go wrong with either. Enjoy!

this was the one i got to baby sit. i will say i wasnt impressed with the durability of the finish on it but other then that i thought it was a great gun.

my favorite gun dealer has sold a few of the new para gi expert models also. he says they seem to be pretty good guns and everyone hes sold one to really seems to like them. i trust him enuff to take his word on it as he has the 1911 bug himself and he really has some nice 1911s in his own collestion. i however personally havent handled one.
