It's still a locking knot, though. I've got a noose in my front yard right now(yay, Halloween!) that I can't open without a knife.

It's not uncommon at all. Well-trained hangmen are supposed to avoid it, but it happens more than most people think, in places where hanging is done.

Surely you could put a tarp under them yeah?? Or hang them over a bucket or something??
