Mrs. tman is interested in upgrading her firepower. She currently shoots the Bersa .380. She hates the feel of polymer framed pistols. Striker fired is okay, but she does like the DA/SA with decocker. Suggestions for less than $500? fire away... --edit-- forgot to mention that this is for carry, so she's looking for one with a shorter grip: <10 round mag > give or take... |

The CZ 2075 RAMI (not the RAMI P which is polymer) is a nice DA/SA subcompact. The issue there is that only the new BD model has a de-cocker, and I don't think you can get that one for under $500 yet. I have an older 9mm without the de-cocker, so I spent a lot of time practicing with it unloaded until I was comfortable with it. |

For under $500 - I'd go with Joel's advice and look at the S&W semis... For a bit more, you could get a decent 1911 from Taurus or Springfield. b |

If she wants a full-size, there are some 1911s (Taurus, Para GI, etc.) that can be had for just a little over $500. That said, I'd second the used Sig idea. $500 might be pushing it, most I've seen are between $500 and $600, but they are a nice gun for that price (P239, maybe)? -Mark |

Thanks! All great suggestions so far. She's not really into revolvers, so we haven't looked at those. After window shopping and handling a lot of guns at a couple of local retailers (no range work), the Mrs has decided NOT to rule out polymer pistols, which now opens up a whole new world. She got her hands on a Taurus PT111, which she like for grip width and general comfort, but now wants to see what a Taurus 24/7 Pro DS in 9mm would be like. It seems the ability to "decock" the striker on the Taurus to make the first shot seem like DA is appealing. She also like the HK USP 9 compact (used at $699), although I thought it might be a bit long in the barrel for a carry gun (for her). The XD sub-compact also caught her eye.... Choices, choices...I love gun shopping! |

For DA/SA with decocker, what could be more perfect than a SIG P225/P6, P228 or P229. They are famous for being reliable and accurate. They have alloy frames and a steel slide. The P series SIG's also are real easy to take down. They are easy to conceal and Srigs makes a great IWB holster for them. Dan's ammo has ex-Swiss police P228's in stock (with three mags) for $479 which is a steal. (http://www.dansammo.com/firearms.asp). SIG mags are usually $40 plus each. If she has really small hands, the P6 having a single stack magazine, would be perfect. Both these guns are available with very low round counts as many of them were European Police trade-ins. Most of them are near to new inside but have holster wear on the outside. If the holster wear bothers you, you can get the slides refinished for about $50 These are quality guns made in Germany (in the 80's and 90's) with the kind of craftsmanship that made German products famous back then. Some of the newer SIG's seem to suffer from QC issues. Other great DA/SA handguns are the CZ75 D PCR and the CZ P-01. No polymer here! The CZ75 compact is really nice too but it has a safety instead of a decocker. now that she is willing to consider polymer and since you listed the XD, has she looked at a compact M&P? very nice, light and relatively easy to conceal and you can fit it to her hand. i myself don't mind a little holster wear as mine are for use and not collectors items. |

i really like my micro eagle for pocket carry. its double action only. it really seems to be a solid gun and shoots good to. i would note that the recoil is not for beginners the grip size isnt much on it but it is pretty controllable shhottin the cor bon 80 grain dpx loads. |

My wife likes her P6. Like Joel said the 3913/4 or 6906 would be very good choices. In the end, let her choose one. |
