The only firearms-related item they'll see on the squad computer is DNR Firearms Training, which, as you discovered, is not a carry permit. There's a number they can call to check if an individual has a permit to carry.

It's kind of scary that there are officers out there who don't know the difference.

The DNR Firearms Training field shows, strangely enough, whether or not the driver has passed DNR firearms training.

This is actually a huge convenience to many hunters. Hunters born after a certain date are required to have taken DNR firearms safety training. This keeps them from having to carry an extra flimsy paper card year after year with them when they are hunting. You also don't have to scramble around trying to remember just where you safely stowed your card last year when it is time to buy your hunting license this year.

Interesting fact: When you are issued your firearms safety card at age 12, the ID number on the card will be the same as your driver's license number when you get that at age 16.

Very true. However YOU MUST bring your DNR card with you to the DMV in order to get that box checked... In true MN fasion the MN DMV computers can't talk to the MN DNR computers. No card NO checked box. In MN you do have a grandfather date for big game hunting as to who has to and who does not need a firearms saftey card.... However, in other states to go big game hunting, EVERYONE, no matter of age, needs a FAS (Fire Arms Saftety) card.

Not to sure how well this holds true.. I know that the DNR issues you a number that is yours for life. It was my impresion that to help prevent ID theft, the state of MN will be changing your DL # each time you get a new card. I know that my DL # was change when I went and did a card renew... I could very well be wrong on this, heck it isn't the first time I've been wrong and am sure it won't be my last.... Just ask my wife, she will be the 1st to agree with me on that.

Go figure... When I upgraded to my CDL, I asked about the DNR box and was tolf that I had to bring in my FAS certificate in order to get the block checked... I guess different rule for different parts of MN.

It may also depend when you were certified. I was a late bloomer. I was never officially certified until I wanted to hunt in CO.

Same mine just showed up automatically one renewal, didn't even know it was there until I was looking at the card getting it renewed 4 years later

Yeah, I got mine just a few years ago (when I needed it to hunt in another state) so it showed up on my DL next time I renewed. No fuss. Which is nice.

So, if I took the DNR class say 25 years ago, and no longer have the piece of paper, can the DNR look that up for me, or do I have to retake the test?

I was wondering that also. It's been about 35 years since I took the class in the basement of the Silver Lake Fire Station in Rochester.

Suddenly, I feel sooooooooo old.

I took the course about 1979 or 1980 and around 1993 I needed a copy of the certificate for a Kansas hunting license and they were able to send me one. I didn't get another patch though.

You might have met my Dad. He worked there at that time.

If you really want a replacement of your orange card you can get one by calling (800) 366-8917 or sending a $5 check and a letter requesting a replacement to:
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources--Enforcement Division
DNR Enforcement Education
Little Falls , Minnesota 56345-4173

They can also issue one at any ELS location too but it will be printed on the same blue paper that the licenses are. There is a small charge either way.

If you really, really must have a patch, I think I have an extra or two.

Thanks! I don't really need a card right now, but I'll request it anyway just in case.
