ttousi, I doubt that they are, but wikipedia has some info on it. It's a Mobile Land Based Phalanx system made by Raytheon Corp.

Nice, video of R2D2. Meanwhile his best friend gun is saying, "they'll never get me onto one of those dreadful battleships!"

I've always thought those systems were cool. Does anyone know if it's true that by the time the CIWS can engage, it's at a range where it's more about lessening the damage an incoming missle will do, rather than being able to eliminate the threat? I heard that & can believe it, but just wondering...

Prolix, I doubt that. At 4500 rounds per minute, it's there to destroy a target. The maximum effective range is probably classified, but I suppose one could SWAG by finding out the max range of a 20MM. That appears to be 1800-2300 meters. The seagoing phalanx was developed to counter surface following missiles inbound to a ship, like the Silkworm.

If you can get the warhead to detonate outdoors rather than indoors.....

Did you read the part where one model only held 989 rounds and another was 1550 rounds?? I would have hoped they would have had a capacity for a couple of minutes.

Says they have an auto sytem to feed fresh magazines and remove spent mags.

At that rate of fire I wonder what they use to keep the barrels cool ?

Maybe an Army guy would, but NEVER a Sailor!! A Sailor would improvise something so he could sit in the Mess Decks or Shop and suck down coffee. :D

I believe they have a single mag of 1550 rounds that is conveyer-fed to the gun. The empties are stuffed back into the magzine from the other end.

As far as cooling, it appears that there are six barrels, meaning the rate of fire is reduced to 750 rounds/min per barrel; much more managable from a heat standpoint. It also means that the barrel bundle (it is basically a gatling gun) is spinning at 750 rpm too, providing some air cooling.

The data sheet at:

http://www.raytheon.com/products/stellent/groups/public/documents/content/cms01_055720.pdf

Indicates seawater cooling as well. It is not clear whether that is for barrel cooling or drive cooling (70 kw when tracking!).
