Liberal gun laws fail once again

Const. Valerie Gignac simply didn’t have a chance. The bullet that killed the young Laval, Que., police officer last week passed right through her bullet-proof vest, CanWest News Service reported yesterday.

It was one of two shots fired from a .338-calibre hunting rifle — a weapon usually used for moose hunting — that hit the police officer.

“No bullet-proof vest would have resisted this weapon. This rifle is so powerful that she didn't have a chance,” said Sgt. Francois Dore of the provincial police, which is leading the criminal investigation.

Francois Pepin — who struggles with mental health problems and has a history of clashes with authority — has been charged with the first-degree murder of the 25-year-old officer. In 1999, a Quebec court prohibited Pepin from possessing firearms for a period of 10 years, CanWest reported.

The order was imposed after Pepin was convicted of harassing security guards at the Laval courthouse that same year. However, the judge also ruled Pepin could have access to his weapons during autumn hunting season, as long as he was accompanied by a friend.

Cases such as this highlight one of the most serious contributing factors to the increased gun violence across Canada. And no, as opposed to what Prime Minister Paul Martin would try and have you believe, it’s not legally owned handguns.

It’s the lax justice system that is simply years, if not decades behind the reality of life in today’s world. It’s also a result of years of Criminal Code tinkering by a government that often appears to be more concerned with the rights of the accused than the rights of the victim, or potential victims.

Days before Gignac’s death, Prime Minister Paul Martin — hungry for seats in vote-rich and violence-plagued Toronto — promise a re-elected Liberal government would ban handguns in Canada.

Canadians who refuse to give up their legally registered handguns could face seizure of their weapons by police and up to 10 years in prison under the proposed handgun ban recently announced by Martin.

Huh? Aren’t handguns effectively banned now? Haven’t law-abiding handgun owners been participating in an effective registry for decades?

How would taking handguns from target shooters and collectors keep a gangster from obtaining an illegal weapon on the black market? Statistics Canada reported handguns killed 112 murder victims in 2004. Most of those weapons were not registered.

John Hipwell, owner of Wolverine Supplies in Virden and the chief ranger of a gun club in the Virden area, told the Winnipeg Free Press the Liberal plan would have little effect.

“If someone was walking down the street and wanted to buy a Smith & Wesson revolver from my shop on a whim, they would not be able to buy one,” Hipwell said.

And the Liberals’ long-gun registry, a scheme hatched in the late 1990s again to appeal to urban voters, is simply an expensive farce, with administrative costs shooting from the less than $2 million originally forecast to almost $2 billion.

What will help put a lid on all gun violence would be some tougher laws with mandatory minimum sentences for crimes involving guns (it’s hard to stick up a corner store when you’re behind bars).

Also, the money wasted on seizing legal handguns from target shooters and collectors — as well as any further funds earmarked for the long-gun registry — should be directed to front-line policing in our cities and on our borders.

As for those who claim government should address the root causes of crime — poverty, drug addiction and unemployment — we as a society first have to get a handle on the violence before those issues can be begin to be effectively addressed."

Here is someone who has it right :!:

There are a lot of ironies in the Canada stories, lately. I own a Para Ordnance handgun, for example, and they market them heavily enough in the United States.

I also find it interesting that they blame the increase of gun crimes in Toronto over the last year on gangs that have imported guns from the United States. In the meantime they take no responsibility for securing their own border or the fact that it is Canadian citizens weilding the American-sourced guns (supposedly).

The truth is that they have a poverty/gang/drug problem and they're using us as a scapegoat. It seems like we're one of the few countries that takes ownership of our problems. Some of the conservatives do belittle Mexico for not helping with the border issues, but most of the blame is laid where it belongs.

IF you can put on your reading glasses or enhance the photo somehow, I found this on The High Road, posted by a Canadian citizen

It's a really slow loading picture

Seems like there are some pro-gun people up Nort. Of course, they are apparently from the western side of Canada, which, from what I understand, is a fairly conservative bunch.
