We are doing some lead reclamation at Elk River Sportsman Club in the pistol berms. The thing is, we are finding tons and tons of copper jacketed 230 gr 45 acp bullets that look like they are in perfect condition, zero deformation as far as we can tell. Roughly half the stuff we are pulling out of the berm is this stuff.
The sand in the berms up there is very fine and soft and seems to cushion the bullets just fine.

Well, that is going to happen for sure, but I was thinking I could save several steps.

Oh I know. I know. All those things went through my mind too. I just had to ask. We're going to melt down our fair share anyhow. The jackets were just too pretty.
What do you think on the lead slugs? Just run 'em through the sizer-luber or melt 'em all the way down?

Not to mention that casting bullets is fun.
It'd be nice to have a supply of lead like that available.

You know what the small sand particles embedded in the lead bullet after it's resized will do to your barrel?? Do you want to find out?? What's the relative cost of new barrel(s) for your gun(s) for the amount of money you will save (like maybe a few bucks a thousand rounds) on some slightly cheaper bullets?? In addition, make sure you smelt all that stuff OUTDOORS. I knew a guy who did that stuff in his garage (sometimes with the door open, sometimes not) and he was completely bald and spoke with a stutter. Chronic lead poisioning - systemic and completely irreversible.

I got a firsthand look at the bullets last weekend. I would never have asked the question had I seen them first. Most were quite deformed.
On the plus side - the boys picked up a five gallon pail of 223 brass from the Sherburne Co Sheriff's rifle practice.

The boys have dollar signs in their eyes. They figure they've got better than 2000 rounds. They've been tumbling them for days. They are hoping to clear $100 on eBay.
