Forgive me if this isn't the spot for this post (and feel free to relocate it). General Gun Discussions seemed to me to be the most appropriate place.

From the General Announcements Forum:

plblark wrote:
I wonder who I would contact there to get a forum discount set up or maybe to discuss their LEO / EMS only policies and how to streamline them.
...and then joelr wrote:
I'd suggest using the Forum software to send an email to the Streichers forum account; you might sign it by using your name, and the title, "TCCarry Forum Group Buy Coordinator" since, well, you are.

Those comments, in connection with remembering the "Group Buy on The Book" thread, made me wonder the feasibility of the following:

Is it possible to organize a Group Buy on, say, Kimber Custom II 1911's? Or XD's? Sigs?

My point being, if enough of us at TCC wanted in, and we organized a buy of two dozen(+?) pistols or so (of an agreed upon make and model), and put in an order to a manufacturer through a single FFL (Streichers?), would that give us opportunity for a nice pricing discount?

If the prices were right, I can't imagine many who would pass up the chance to get in on a good deal. And hey, how cool (nerdy?) would it be to get a group photo with all the new matching pistols? :D

What are the legalities of that? Is anyone else interested in such a venture?

The ammo maybe, but I think it would be hard to get enough members to agree on a certain gun. I'm sure that a .40 would be the caliber choice however.

That'd be my choice. :)

 Au contraire...the Wonder 9 for the frugal or a good ol U.S. 45 would be THE caliber of choice.

Christmas is coming you know...

If it's a .40 I'd like a P226. Any seconds?

...of course, I suppose it does depend on what plblark can do for us; being our resident Group Buy Coordinator and all. :)

Hey Joel, can he get that as the description between his name and avatar?

The title is mostly honorary anyway But I'd be happy to try and set up anything you feel would work out.

The ammunition buy sounds to me to have a better chance of succeeding than a group buy on a specific handgun. I keep hearing that the margin on handguns isn't all that significant anyway.

Let me kick the ammunition idea around a bit...

I moved it to Deals to keep the group buy stuff together.

I was afraid you might say that about the pistols.

At $500-$800, I'm wondering where the majority of the moolah goes. No standard pistol I've ever seen has that value of material or manufacturing into it. Is it the manufacturer that pockets a 600% - 1000% markup on what looks to be (to me) probably about $80 - $100 worth of weapon?

As far as ammo goes, if we're looking at a group buy, .45 would seem to me to give the most bang for a discount, as it's the highest priced of the annointed three, "top tier" calibers.

:!: Ugh. I can't believe I just used that phrase. I feel dirty.

I'm hoping someone else will pipe up about the economics of gun sales but ...
I suspect that 10% for raw materials may be correct.

Then we add the machines and labor and process control and engineering and QA and litigation ...

I'm wondering if there isn't an easier way to go. Perhaps Bud's Guns of Internet fame would be able to assist? When I try to decide what a gun is worth new, I usually look at Bud's and call the wholesale price 90% of that and then compare. If, after shipping and Transfer, Bud's is better, that may be the way to go. With a group order, we might be able to set up a grouped shipping or some such.

The thing I worry about with group buys of guns is liability. If, however, we could arrange something with a FFL, in state or out, it might be a good thing.

A couple thoughts:
Mark K of the Last Gun Shop fame. We could probably arrange something coinciding with a gun show.
BPR does transfers for reasonable rates.
I wonder who we'd approach at Gun Stop and how many pieces it would take to get a break?

Anyone else have any ideas?

It will have to go through an FFL. I can't see any other way this could be considered legal.

I don't have time right now but I do have a wholesale catalog and can get you some mark-up ideas. From what I can remeber the mark-up on my Taurus 24/7 was just under $100 and the mark-up on an M&P was about $130. Better yet go to Buds Gun Shop some of his prices seemed to be pretty close to average wholesale.

It absolutely has to go through a FFL. I was thinking of the No gun sales rule here and the Logistics of 4473's, receiving, and etc...
