Minneapolis police seek suspects in two weekend homicides

By TIM HARLOW, Star Tribune
Last update: August 11, 2008 - 9:56 AM

Minneapolis police are searching for suspects in two homicides that happened over the weekend.

"We have no arrests in either of the homicides," spokesman Jesse Garcia said this morning.

On Saturday, officers responded to reports of a shooting just after 10 p.m. in the 2900 block of Bryant Av. N. When police arrived, they found one man lying in the street. He was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified Sunday night as Naquain D. Brown, 35, of Minneapolis.

Police found a second victim lying nearby. That person, whose name has not been released, was taken to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale. A third victim involved in the shooting was admitted to Hennepin County Medical Center. He was still being treated for a gunshot wound Monday morning, police said.

Around 1 a.m. Sunday, a man whose name has not been released, was shot dead early Sunday in an alley in the 400 block of 24th Avenue N.

The two homicides bring the number in Minneapolis to 26 for the year.

This day sucked. It was Saturday, and I was working. The phones were ringing off the hook. At the risk of possibly saying too much, the Minneapolis Emergency Communications Center (MECC) was UNDER staffed that night. Our staffing minimum for that day was 8 (operators only, not counting dispatch or supervisors) and we techincally had 6 (though the 6th also assists the information channel if needed which pulls them of the phone).

We always run right at minimums; rarely ever do we exceed minimums. There are too many occasions where we are under minimums too, and Saturday night was one of them.
