Quote: A Lakeville police officer [Nicholas Albert Reitmeier] finds himself on the wrong side of the law, charged with using a camera to video tape and take pictures of minors involved in pornographic poses.
But they go through background checks and the Chief evaluates them constantly, and ...
... they are "special" people.

Does anyone know where to find the number of police officers convicted of sexual or violent crimes over the past few years? Or any crime at all I suppose... I'd be curious to see that.

That's a statistic you can be sure no police department, county attorney's office, or court system keeps. Best source would be newspapers. The print media usually do cover these crimes when the county attorney charges them out (but not when an internal "job action" is deemed sufficient punishment).

Quote: Dakota County Sheriff's investigators also retrieved photos of Taniguchi and another adult female pointing a .357 magnum handgun and Reitmeier's department-issued Glock semiautomatic pistol at each other and toward the camera.

At least management is willing to let him get thrown under bus:
Star Tribune wrote: Backstrom said the case surfaced after rumors about the kissing video circulated at the two girls' Dakota County high school. A student told the liaison officer. He contacted Lakeville police, which asked the Sheriff's Office to investigate.
Reitmeier has been on paid leave since Lakeville police were informed Jan. 9 about his possible involvement in the incident. Chief Tom Vonhof said Reitmeier has had no discipline or commendations since he was hired in 2002 as a community service officer. He became a patrol officer in 2004.
Vonhof said the charges are very serious.
"I am stunned and disappointed," he added. "Our department policy establishes a high standard of values and behavior that is expected of our officers at all times. Clearly, the behaviors alleged here violate and contradict those values."
Reitmeier was released on $20,000 bail Tuesday. Taniguchi is expected to appear in court within a month.

Yup. If the allegations are true, they should. That's one sign of a good department -- if the "mistake" is serious enough, the guy goes. I know of one good department who fired a guy over a single DWI. Perfectly nice guy, and decent cop, so I hear, and if the guy had gotten treatment for a drinking problem before getting caught DWI, that would have been another thing, but the attitude was no, we don't have drunk cops driving on the street. Period.
In contrast, I'm reminded of the MPD cop got drunk and picked a fight in a bar, went outside with the guy who he felt like tuning up, got himself beaten up and his gun taken. I don't remember if he got a one-day rip or nothing, but . . .

I have been led to believe that, generally, this charge could get the feds attention...

Yes, if he weren't getting the "police special" pass from the Feds.

If he lands in prison as a former cop AND sex crime against a minor?
He'll get all the stimulation he wants...assuming he finds prostatic massage stimulating.

Where do you keep finding these amazing, albeit inappropriate, emoticons? I love them!
