For commercial beer, I have to also throw summit out there. I always ask for it when we go out. They've got an awesome oatmeal stout that they occasionally release for limited periods of time.
They give free tours of the brewery here in St. Paul, real nice and you get free beer.

Where were you in Germany?
The bottled Guinness is different beer from the Guinness in cans. It's live, so the taste can vary. The can stuff is pasteurized and stable.

Kitzigen and Swinefurt.
The bottled Guinness over there is much different then it is over here. I think all the beers in Germany are "live" as required by the "pure beer" act or something as such which dictates exactly what a "beer" can contain.

I guess "Schwinefurt" is closer to the actual spelling.

Ah, yes, the German Beer Purity Law of 1516. Also known as Reinheitsgebot. For those with nothing better to do, do a google search.
You'll find out all sorts of interesting info. on this.
Condensed:
Required that all beer just contain Water,Barley, and hops.

You can make your own beer at Vinepark brewery in St Paul about 2 blocks from the Xcel Energy Center on 7th street.
Very good beer.

Perhaps we should have a moment of silence (is this possible on a forum) in remembrance of the Hamm's brewery that burned yesterday in St. Paul...

My favorite beer by far is MaClay Wallace IPA. Mackenzies on Henepin Ave was the only bar in town that could get it on tap. It is no longer availible in the United States. What I wouldn't do to get my hands on another pint.
I guess I could plan a trip to Scotland...
