"A North Side schoolteacher said a lack of jobs and community programs for kids have contributed to the violence. And a longtime community activist speculated that economic difficulties create an around-the-clock stress factor that pushes some into crime."

It's not the criminals' fault, it's our fault for not providing midnight basketball and self esteem training.

I read an interesting sociological study once about Harlem, which had an incredible Renaissance in the twenties and thirties, and only declined when do-gooders starting messing around in the sixties.

Yes, I read it..

A few things that caught my eye were:

"Police are targeting problem areas, but say they're still fighting the results of easier access to guns and shooters who don't fear the legal consequences. "

So what have the police been doing in the past to correct this issue?
What have parents and community members been doing with this issue, other then blaming the tools (guns)?
Also, the biggest red flag to me is shooters who dont fear the legal system. Why should they?

I as a parent, I keep my kids in site at all times. I dont live in a big city, but I still care way to much about my kids to let them run free anyplace or anytime.

When I look back at my own childhood, my parents kept me in site, or I had to tell them where I was going and when I would be home.. and if I happened to end up someplace else... well.. today my parents would be in trouble.. years ago.. I was..

Joe Olson was kind enough to forward along a link, as well.

Hmmm... if the city manages to close down the last gunshop in Minneapolis -- see http://www.savethegunshop.com -- do you think we'll all be much safer?
:?

The part of guns are easy to get.. is a key phrase the anti's use to try and start panic in people. So a soccer mom who does not keep track of the issues, thinks.. its a bigget issue than it is.

It's something to think about. One of the ways that the antis have been very successful is in their sloganeering, which -- all too often -- sets uninterested folks' frames of reference. This "guns are easier to get" thing, for one. "Guns on the street," for another. (Where is this "street"?) "This law will let anybody have a gun." (How did the MCPPA change the law about firearms ownership, other than to restrict it?)

And so on.

My mistake. It is actually in the south side of Chicago.
Home of the most murders in the US.
They topped 600 last year!

Congratulations Mayor Daley!!

Amazingly enough, handguns are illegal in Chi-town.

Mr. Lott could probably write an entire book solely about the stupidity of Chicago gun laws.
