Hi All,
Been lurking here for several months now. Decided to register since I plan to purchase my first handgun soon. Also plan to get my CCW permit as well.
MN resident all my life. Done my share of hunting - have plenty of rifle/shotgun experience. I've fired a handgun (I think) twice in my life. Ever since the carry law changed I've had the idea that I wanted to get the permit. I guess I'm finally ready to pull the trigger (pun very much intended).
Back when I was a late-teen, I served as a rifle range officer at a youth summer camp - .22 bolt action rifles - prone only. And assisted with some youth firearm safety training courses. Though it has been many years since I've been through any sort of training or refreshers.
Got my eye on a Taurus PT140 or similar (probably go with the .40 S&W). A couple reasons for this: sub-compact design for carry purposes; plus I have some pretty small hands. In addition, the Taurus models are affordable (don't have a ton of cash to spend on a handgun) and the vast majority of reveiws I've read seem to be favorable. I have noted that most sub-compact semi-autos have increased recoil (from reading, no experience with this), though I think for my purposes I don't expect this to be too great a hurdle.
So, first thing is to obtain the weapon and head to a range to get a feel for it. The Burnsville range is probably where I'll be and then I plan to take their class just as soon as I can - followed by the permit application. I expect to be purchasing a weapon in the next couple weeks here.
I've been doing a ton of reading on the web about different handguns, classes, permit applications, the whole deal. So I feel like I have most of the information I need. Though I welcome any thoughts on my weapon selection as well as any experiences with the Burnsville range and their courses.

Well, since BPR is part of the competition, I'd love to be able to say that they don't do a great job, but I can't, because they do. I'm more than passingly fond of TCCarry, of course, but I don't worry about the people who go to BPR getting shortchanged or CoconutCharlied, 'cause they won't.

Welcome!
There are many great instructors in Minnesota...some of which are on this forum. Although Roger and most of the BPR crew don't hang out around these parts much (with a few exceptions), their operation is no slouch either.
Spend some time renting and borrowing different pistols you'd like to try. The most important factor for carry is that it is comfortable and reliable for you to use. Following that, we can talk about how to carry it. Unless you are absolutely in need of a pocket-sized pistol, there are ways to comfortably carry (and conceal, if need be) just about any handgun.

Jeff,
Welcome to the forum!
As mrokern mentioned, try several guns before buying one. You might find things that you like and things that you dislike on each model.
