Yesterday I watched Sam Fuller's 1980 film The Big Red 1 --- a collection of tales about the 1st Army's campaigns in North Africa and Europe. Before disembarking at some Algerian beach the sergeant (Lee Marvin) tells his men to put condoms over the ends of their rifle barrels to keep out the salt water.
So, the next time you plan an amphibious landing --- don't forget your rubbers!

don't use condoms on your firearm in MN. It could be construed as a suppressor.

During Desert Shield/ Storm, I believe that this was fairly common. It was supposed to keep the sand out of the barrel and with that, some of the other internals.

In Russia hunters commonly do that to keep snow out of shotgun barrels.
I know of one guy who had "some 'splainin to do" to his wife when he got back from a weekend hunting trip and a couple of condoms fell out of his pocket.

/me looks at AP4
So do you roll it over the front sight or get some extra small ones to make it stay on?
I have an image of telling the check out lady that my black rifle, the condoms and I are going to go spend some quality time out in the woods together.

That's what I did, that sand was nasty, almost like powder.

Yeah, the sand is so fine that they can't even make concrete with it. Trying cleaning that crap out of the avionics or the bearing surfaces. For the bearings, we would grease those after every flight as compared to every seven days stateside or at sea. Nasty stuff.
